Roebuck Bay is a well-known location for bird-watching around Broome. At the farthest point of Roebuck Bay to the south there is often a flock of Pied Oystercatchers that number several hundred birds. In recent years there have been Pied Oystercatchers attempting to breed along the shores of Roebuck Bay.

The Tawny Frogmouths had bred once again and they had a young bird with them in the Poinciana tree that they like to use in Cygnet Park. We first noticed the odd eye in April this year, but it does not appear to bother it and it can still feed and obviously breed too. They’re great birds to be able to see so close to home!

There are Little Terns that breed across the north of Australia, Little Terns that breed on the coast of eastern and south-eastern Australia and another population that visit at this time of year from Asia. The population of Little Tern that visit from Asia breed in Asia and visit Australia in their non-breeding months.

It is perfect camping and birding weather! One of the places that we visited was Kununurra and discovered that not only are the Pied Oystercatchers busy attempting to breed along Broome’s coastline, but so are the Comb-crested Jacanas. The egg is to the left of the adult bird just above one of the fringe lilies.

Well, it is that time of year again and shorebirds are breeding. Hopefully all of the migratory shorebirds that left Roebuck Bay earlier this year have been successful at breeding in the Northern Hemisphere and will soon be heading back to our shores. I have also learnt to not count my chickens before they hatch.

At this time of year we are on the lookout for the start of breeding season in Pied Oystercatchers. They use the same nest site for subsequent clutches if any fail during the breeding season. There are still two eggs and although this pair has not been successful for many years at least they are attempting to breed.

Every year we observe both egg and chick loss amongst our Pied Oystercatcher pairs along Cable Beach and also in Roebuck Bay during their breeding season. The breeding season starts around the end of June and there are still eggs being laid and chicks hatching, but now these are the second clutches of eggs.

There were not many birds to observe due to the bad state of the wetland, but there was a breeze and as usual there was nobody else around. There had not been many birds in the settling ponds either, but there were some Royal Spoonbills and White Ibis. Cattle Egret should not be in breeding plumage in June in the north of Australia!

He is supposed to help out at that stage of the breeding process. He often lands high up in a nearby tree and looks down. He will have to start to pull his weight once the chicks start demanding food! Male Mistletoebird. We really don’t like the presence of Black Kites along the beach when the Pied Oystercatchers are breeding. They present a real threat to the birds and have been known to take young chicks. We continue to bird-watch from the bitumen and rain continues to fall across the north of Australia. The highway divides a huge expanse of flooded land and numerous bird species have bred in the area over recent weeks. The highways continue to be repaired or closed at short notice and it will remain this way for quite some time yet.

The month starts with many birds and ends with very few – but some of those are quite spectacular. If there ever was a misnamed bird, it is the white-faced morph of the Black Bulbul. Apparently, the bird can warm itself if it gets cold. This bird is still at least 1000 km away from its breeding grounds.

The bright yellow shrivelled-up skin of the naked head is most repulsive…and yet it must be repeated few birds present a finer sight when on the wing… ”. However, my current favourite member of the family Cucilidae is the Great Spotted Cuckoo (GSC), a common bird in Cyprus in spring. Perhaps the most curious thing about the Great Spotted Cuckoo is its distribution, for it is both a non-breeding Palearctic migrant to Africa, and a trans-Africa migrant.

It’s a bird that rarely occurs inland, and outside the breeding season it spends its time far out to sea. British-ringed Kittiwakes have been reported many times from Greenland and Newfoundland, and birds in adult plumage are regularly seen in winter in mid-Atlantic.
