Cypriot Delights: Part I

First recorded breeding on the island in 2013, this dove is now both widespread and common. Today they are a Cypriot success story, for they have established themselves at many locations, and even breed in the middle of roundabouts in the bustling town of Larnaka. Hoopoes are common breeding birds.

Common Ringed Plover

Very occasionally though, one might stray down the eastern seaboard of the USA, but for the most part, those that breed in arctic Canada migrate towards Europe and swell numbers there during the winter. In this part (sorry Corey) all those tundran breeders seem to have followed the path most flown.

My Global Big (half-)Day, May 2022

A few Eurasian Tree Sparrows land by my car as I am scanning for Purple and Squacco Herons , Pygmy Cormorants and Black-necked Grebes in their brilliant breeding plumage. Unlike the wide open Centa, birding in Sakule (cover photo) is mostly done from the embankment. Watching carefully, yes, not one, but two.

Birding Shanghai in May 2024

The species is a cooperative breeder – chicks from previous breeding attempts help bringing up the next batch of chicks, like baby-sitting teenagers, though the latter are not related to the kids they babysit and also mainly do it for money, so I guess these two things are not really comparable at all.

In Search of New York’s Breeding Birds

As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. I said good-bye to Wurtsboro and headed east and then north, making my way to the Town of Wallkill in Ulster County, in particular, to Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge where I hoped to see Grasshopper Sparrows and other grassland breeders.

Yellow-headed Blackbirds: Conspicuous Wetland Breeders

I had returned to the location we had seen this rather large breeding flock to photograph some Sandhill Cranes that were also nesting in this large wetland that makes up part of the headwaters of the middle fork of the Feather River. His rivals where on the other side of the bridge, foraging on the lily pads for aquatic insects.
