Hence, I was quite surprised with a brave, almost exciting paper by Brown, Forbes and Symes: “Recent history of the Egyptian Vulture in Southern Africa” (Vulture News, 2000). During my lifetime, this species was rare in my native Serbia, too. However, these birds used to live in my country and I still wanted to see them closer to home.

First, 800 km of driving from Belgrade through Bulgaria to very NE corner of Greece and the Dadia Forest National Park with its 36 species of diurnal raptors, out of Europe’s 38. From there to the nearby Evros River Delta, at the very border with Turkey, with more easterly species such as the Spur-winged Plover.

This lake, with a surface area of up to 150 square miles in good years, is my go-to site for dozens of waterfowl and shorebird species, so I take its health personally. It is also a vital wintering and migratory site for most of these species, so I imagine they take its health very personally, as well.

I am certainly not complaining though, as a repetitive working routine that will lead to around 500 species a year is better than the working routine I had in the late 2000′s, where seeing more than 250 species a year would have been extraordinary. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species. Cattle Tyrant – Machetornis rixosa. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis. The equanimity occurred as the two totals passed 3560. Alphabetic Taxonomic. 04 Apr 2018.

They noted 598 species as a team, bringing the year total to 2118 and pushing the life list to 3555. Cattle Tyrant – Machetornis rixosa. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis. In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis. Cattle Tyrant – Machetornis rixosa. May I extend my thanks to all the beats.
