Big Ticks; What Was Your Last New Family?

10,000 Birds

But there is one kind of tick that I genuinely do enjoy, and as I do more and more birding it becomes harder and harder to get; new families. Getting entirely new families is easy when you start birding. Sometimes you may even lose them, like the aforementioned woodswallows which are probably no longer a family.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is here again!

10,000 Birds

This year the first clutch was laid at the end of May and this is the first time we have had eggs laid in May along Cable Beach since 2000. What’s Going On

10,000 Birds

A very vocal (though not too visible) family of Steller’s Jays turned up, which was a shock, because here in central Mexico I had never before seen this conifer-loving species below 2900 m (9500 ft). These birds, however, were seen at “only” 2300 m (7550 ft). This was my best photo of a low-altitude Steller’s Jay.

GUYANA–Simply Delicious Birding!

10,000 Birds

And Giant Otters are still common in the rivers around Karanambu Ranch, home of the late “otter lady”, Diane McTurck, who used to rehabilitate orphaned otters and whose family still runs the lodge. Guyana is probably most famous in birding circles for the unlikely discovery of a population of critically endangered Red Siskins in early 2000.

Birding around Chaka, Qinghai, China

10,000 Birds

Chaka is a small town, with just about 2000 people. The Brown Accento r certainly ranks among the less attractive accentors, though of course, some species in this family set a rather high bar. Fortunately, I share this preference with birds, which we found away from the lake, mostly in some semi-desert areas.
