Mid-May to Mid-Jun is the best time to see some of the most exciting species here, as this is the prime breeding time. For another species, the Firethroat , it meant I only got acceptable views rather than the really good ones reportedly possible a few weeks earlier. Still, not a bird that merits flying 2000 km from your hometown.

Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. The 39 owls include five endemic Caribbean species.

There were also Collared Lories , not only a species endemic to Fiji but a genus, as well as Polynesian Trillers , Collared Kingfishers and Pacific Swallows. The species replaces the common Wattled Honeyeater that can be found across the rest of Fiji’s islands, as well as the rest of Polynesia.

Even though there are several spots where different species can take baths at their leisure, this male Lesser Goldfinch ( Spinus psaltria ) decided to evict a Ruby-crowned Kinglet ( Regulus calendula ) that was really enjoying itself!

It also brought back memories of a Fork-tailed Flycatcher that I found in Queens, New York in 2000.
