It was organized to boost eBird use, raise funds for bird conservation, and just get more people out birding. How can we say that magic is a farce when the May blossoms are backdropping bright, breeding plumaged Canadas , Magnolias , Chestnut-sideds , chocolate Bay-breasteds , and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks ?

Another question this raises has to do with migration itself. Loons hardly ever fly when they are on their breeding grounds or their winter-water, but the migration is for many loons a non-trivial distance. Perhaps that will be the subject of a future post in this space. __ 1 Fransson, et al, 2001. Why migrate?
