Aging a thrush.

A completely leucistic thrush had been recorded in the park in July 2005 and the observation had been written up in a far more formal style than you are likely to see from this blogger. noted that the bird from 2005 was to be found in a small area with a few conspecifics. There was one entry that particularly caught my attention.

Black-throated Gray Warbler at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

There are only two previous records, one from the Christmas Bird Count in 1991 and one from November of 2005, when I didn’t live in Queens and had just gotten into birding. Interestingly, I had made a brief attempt at the 2005 bird but my time was severely limited by Daisy’s family obligations and I dipped.

Banded Lapwing visits Broome

The last time we had a Banded Lapwing Vanellus tricolor visit was 25th February 2008 and prior to that was 23rd September 2005. We have a rare visitor in Broome at the moment, which is rather nice! It is with the Masked Lapwings Vanellus miles and enjoying the lush green grass as a result of recycled water from the Poo Ponds.

Rarities at the South Florida Bird Observatory

2005 was a really interesting year with several notable rarities: Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, Thick-billed Vireo and Townsend’s Warbler. Since 2002, the five most numerous species banded at the nets are as follows in descending order: Black-throated Blue Warbler, Ovenbird, American Redstart, Gray Catbird and Black-and-white Warbler.
