Did you know that every year, of the 8 million dogs and cats that enter animal shelters, 3 million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized? Luckily, The Shelter Pet Project hopes to change this! Here is one of the great PSAs that The Shelter Pet Project has out. It is such a sad statistic.

Cookson were accused of participating in an “off the books” arrangement wherein Harmon and Cookson carried out unauthorized mass euthanasias at the Tulare County, California shelter – reportedly using nonstandard and painful methods – by falsifying records to cover their actions.

In 2009 they laid two clutches of two eggs, but they were all predated. No eggs were laid in 2007, but in 2008 they laid their first two eggs and after three days they did not seem at all interested in sitting on them. The eggs remained there for the whole season and we presume that they were young and inexperienced.

In New Zealand I’d even dived the astonishing Milford Sound in Fiordlands National Park, but I didn’t make it to New Zealand’s most famous dive site until January of 2009. Fortunately we stopped for lunch in a sheltered bay and I recovered in time for my next dive.

Investigative journalism by the Salt Lake Tribune, following-up on allegations levelled by PETA against the University of Utah's Comparative Medicine Center and the Cardiovascular Research & Training Institute laboratories revealed the two laboratories had used 190 dogs and cats in 2009, all obtained from shelters.
