Egg harvesting to sell as food was intensive then, with thousands taken annually from the breeding colonies in Chile. Despite the long history of impacts and steady population decline, the Andean Flamingo has been declared endangered as recent as September 2010.

In 2000, around 1,000 breeding pairs were known, but by 2009, the number had plummeted to just 120-220 pairs, a decline of 88%. During that time, adult survival appeared unchanged and breeding success was reasonable, but the recruitment of young birds back into the adult population was zero in all but one of the years studied.

As 2013 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 , 2011 , and 2012 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. The end of the year is nigh and birders the world over are looking over their checklists and reminiscing about their amazing sightings and devastating dips.

Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.
