There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years. 2010; Macaw Recovery Network 2019). A group (maybe 4-5 ex.)

Both species are notoriously aggressive, and out-competed bluebirds for the nesting cavities they needed to raise their young. With competition for nesting sites diminished, the bluebirds rebounded, and their populations have been growing by 2% every year between 1966 and 2010. Please do not pick up or touch wild birds.

SeaWorld worked with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to develop a program to sustain the species’ growth.

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version.

Others, like the petrels and some of the auks, will lay a single egg per breeding attempt. The investment placed in each clutch bur seabirds is so great that only one breeding attempt can be seen to completion each year. They are cavity nesters, breeding in natural cavities or holes dug into the soil. So why do it?

The USFWS designated the whooping cranes in this population “nonessential and experimental.” Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.
