My second favorite rescue story is that of Hunter, a beagle-ish dog that my daughter and son-in-law adopted from a shelter in Massachusetts. The chart of breeding bird survey data goes up, up, up, particularly for the period from 1990 to 2010. The distribution map of the state is filled with green (counted for both atlases) and blue (second atlas period only) but very little yellow (first atlas period only), meaning there are many more blocks where breeding activity was observed.

I’ve also seen them in Greece twice: one sighting was a flock of nine birds at Lake Kerkini in January 2010, while a single individual I saw there in November 2017 was accompanying Russian Whitefronts (and not the nearby Lesser Whitefronts.) Apparently, King Parrot are an Australian grindcore band formed in Melbourne in 2010. On the other hand, the Black Kite is a raptor not known for integrity – Black Kites are opportunistic hunters and are more likely to scavenge ( source ). Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Do all hunters realize that?

The beats have been out to line their route and cheer them along, wishing them bon voyage and a safe return next spring.
