This year, the with the help of Iams, the Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon helped raised $93,645 for orphaned pets! The event is held to raise awareness and money for orphaned pets while promoting responsible pet ownership. The funds raised will be used to support all the programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Raising money for charity doesn’t have to be hard work. In 2010 alone the RSPCA received over 150,000 complaints against animal cruelty and treated and helped more than 211,000 animals in their clinics and hospitals. Raising money for the RSPCA is easy. In fact, thanks to musicMagpie (in the UK) it’s never been easier.

Unique among the auks, indeed among seabirds, they will attempt to double brood, to lay another clutch after successfully raising the first chick. In 2010, the best year on record , 75% of the pairs that raised a chick to fledging attempted a second brood, and 75% of those actually managed to fledge a second chick. So why do it?

They raise their trunks, sniffing the air. This time they appear more relaxed, but nervousness might be a better politics: in 2007, poachers killed only 13 rhinos in South Africa, but in 2008 already 83, in 2009 – 122, in 2010 – 333, in 2011 – 448 and in 2012 a staggering 668! Sniffing us.
