This year, the with the help of Iams, the Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon helped raised $93,645 for orphaned pets! The event is held to raise awareness and money for orphaned pets while promoting responsible pet ownership. The funds raised will be used to support all the programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Raising money for charity doesn’t have to be hard work. In 2010 alone the RSPCA received over 150,000 complaints against animal cruelty and treated and helped more than 211,000 animals in their clinics and hospitals. Raising money for the RSPCA is easy. Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. The grand old bird became a surrogate mother, and raised them herself. Yet I realize banding is a very valuable tool, and gives us information we could not otherwise gather. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. I raised 4 of the cranes shot this year– chicks that still had much of their brown plumage. Nobody needs to eat them.

Both species are notoriously aggressive, and out-competed bluebirds for the nesting cavities they needed to raise their young. With competition for nesting sites diminished, the bluebirds rebounded, and their populations have been growing by 2% every year between 1966 and 2010.
