As it turns out we can add their birds to that list. When I photographed a pair a couple of years ago that were sporting radio tags , I assumed (and it may be the case) that they were two birds of twenty tagged that year in Virginia. I returned the next day and found that the birds were still there.

I knew about the movie since my early birding days although it was more than ten years later before I saw it. Finally, the Schrodinger’s Cat is, of course, The Big Year (2011).

It’s a bang-up breeding year for super-endangered birds! The species, which migrates from the Russian Arctic to Southeast Asia, is down to about 200 breeding pairs in the wild, due to habitat loss and poaching. For the past several years, getting the birds to breed has been an exercise in futility.

The results of the Swarovski Optik Digiscoper of the Year 2011 have just been published and once again, they show just what is possible with a telescope and everything from a cheap compact camera to a semi-pro DSLR. It was by far the most exciting time I’ve ever had photographing a bird.

Our resident shorebirds have started to breed in the last few weeks and there are numerous Pied Oystercatcher nests along our shores right now.

Like many birds, Grebes are mainly preyed on by other birds, but also, because Grebes liv in and on and near (mostly) fresh water, they are also preyed on by the smaller carnivores such as ferrets.

Corey’s best bird of the weekend was a male Long-tailed Duck in breeding plumage off the coast of Queens. I took Ivy to feed the birds up at Irondequoit Bay and observed this small goose. Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. And, the birds are awesome. Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

There are two Painted Bunting populations, one that breeds along the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Florida and one that breeds in the interior United States and northern Mexico from southeastern New Mexico to western Mississippi. The Atlantic Coast population lingers on the breeding grounds after nesting to molt.

Since at least 2009 there has been at least one hypopigmented, or piebald, American Robin living in Alley Pond Park in my home borough of Queens, at least for the breeding season. That changed on a recent visit when the partially leucistic bird and its mate decided to cooperate for me and my camera. It (or they?*)

A good freezeup can send Central flyway birds into the Eastern flyway, bloating apparent numbers by tens of thousands, only to have them all disappear the next winter. The volume and variety of wood-warblers that are regularly seen in spring migration there rival or best anywhere else in the world that the birds are seen. No, in fall there are less birds, mostly those caught out over the lake as dawn broke. Wood-warblers drip from the trees, feed on the boardwalk, and sing at close range.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. Irruptions of Snowy Owls in 2011 and again in 2013 found these Arctic birds wintering well south of their usual range , in some cases straying down to Bermuda and even Hawaii. littoralis is a regular winter visitor in Britain that remains relatively undetected due to the similarity in plumage of most wintering birds to our own resident Rock Pipits A.petrosus. By March though Scandinavian Rock Pipit begins to show some changes into breeding plumage and outs itself as a migrant rather than a resident.

More than 99% of the population of Tricolored Blackbirds ( Agelaius tricolor ) live within the state of California and form the largest colonies of any North American passerine bird 1. Therefore the actual numbers of birds killed are grossly underestimated. The California population estimate derived from the Survey was 145,000 birds.
