The last time I visited Portola was in the summer of 2011 when the Swainson’s Hawks ( Buteo swainsoni ) were nesting there. Like most buteos, the Swainson’s Hawk feeds its young rodents, rabbits and reptiles but not so during non-breeding season. Click on photos for full sized images. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7tVjohOIdI.

Once you start down such a rabbit-hole it is difficult to stop the plunge into full on data-nerd mode. The New Yorker in me likes that the world high counts of Black Scoter , Surf Scoter , and White-winged Scoter were all made off Montauk Point in January and February of 2011. Who has seen the most Green Herons at one time?

Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. Finally, the decision was made to release her in the summer of 2011. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

Over the years Jethro approached rabbits as if they should be his friends, but they usually fled. the Spring 2011 issue of YES! Jethro and the Bunny. Jethro the dog.
