Ron Pittaway has published his winter finch forecast for the winter of 2012-2013. WINTER FINCH FORECAST 2012-2013 The theme this winter is that each finch species will use a different strategy to deal with the widespread tree seed crop failure in the Northeast. It will be a quiet winter in the eastern North Woods.
What was your first bird of 2013? And here’s hoping you see many great birds, including lots of lifers, in 2013! After all, 2012 was a pretty great year and there is no reason 2013 can’t be the same! After all, 2012 was a pretty great year and there is no reason 2013 can’t be the same!
I finally saw my first Eastern Phoebe of 2013 yesterday at Hempstead Lake State Park on Long Island. So, like last year, I thought I would ask the question, which is only really relevant to folks in the midwest and northeast of the United States and in eastern Canada: When did you see your first Eastern Phoebe of 2013?
I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. I came up just short of reaching 1,100 Birds on my overall World Life List , clocking in at 1,096, not a bad increase of 48 from the beginning of 2012 when I started at 1,048. I wonder how many I’ll be able to add in 2013.
Yes, I understand you may feel that 2013 just began and its first weekend comes too quickly, but that is old-fashioned 2012 thinking. Happy New Year! This year, the weekends arrive fast and furious. Make the most of them! Many others, no doubt, will do the same.
Tropical Kingbird is likely to be one of the last birds I see in 2012 and first I see in 2013. At any rate, I’ll let you know what the 2012 magic number is when I am back stateside in 2013. Not a hard bird to come by in Costa Rica. I will wave the white flag now. That’s all for this year birders.

2013 – 24 March. 2012 – 15 March. As I have for years now, I will now ask the same question of midwesterners and northeasterners that I ask every year: When did you see your first Eastern Phoebe of 2020? And was it late or early? 2020 – 15 March. 2019 – 17 March. 2018 – 30 March. 2017 – 12 March. 2016 – 18 March. Enjoy spring!
Ron Pittaway has published his winter finch forecast for the winter of 2013-2014. Will the Bloggerhead Kingbirds ride again in 2013? Though no one from 10,000 Birds participated in this year’s Superbowl of Birding IX and the Bloggerhead Kingbirds did not field a team that doesn’t mean that you can’t read about what happened this year. Only time will tell… a.
The 2011 , 2012 , and 2013 Financial Statements continued to note the increasing deficiencies and continued to state that the ABA had essentially the same plan of action as listed in the 2010 statement. Since 2013, the ABA has had relatively modest annual operating deficits or surpluses, but mostly deficits.
2013 – 24 March. 2012 – 15 March. For me, the 29th is pretty late, though the late date might have more to do with my lack of time birding last weekend rather than phoebes showing up late. Here are my arrival dates for my first Eastern Phoebes of the year for the last nine years: 2014 – 29 March.
On this final day of 2012 it is time, just like it was on the final days of 2010 and 2011 , to share your Best Birds of the Year. Here, without further ado, are your Best Birds of 2012, in no particular order. I think my official Best Bird of 2012, though, was (finally, finally seeing) the Burrowing Owl. Happy New Year!
As of 27 August 2013 the California Bird Records Committee has voted to add the introduced Nutmeg Mannikin to the state checklist. 2013 – 24 March. 2012 – 15 March. My average over the last ten years is now 21 March and it would be much later if not for the early bird I found in 2006 on 03 March. Somehow I forgot that the last time I predicted what the next ten species I would see in Queens would be was back on 30 December 2013, when my list was sitting at 302. What did I predict back in December of 2013? Brown Pelican, 3 Jul 2010, 11 Apr 2011, 15 May 2012, NOT YET SEEN! Long-eared Owl, 3 Jul 2010, 25 Mar 2013.
As 2013 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 , 2011 , and 2012 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. The end of the year is nigh and birders the world over are looking over their checklists and reminiscing about their amazing sightings and devastating dips.
Between 2012 and 2013, populations of Laysan and Black-footed Albatrosses at Midway reached near-record levels. These efforts appear to be paying off–most of the mature Verbesina plants on one of the atoll’s islands are history, and officials expect full eradication from Midway by 2017.
In fact, the last one was back on 15 May 2012 when my Queens list stood at 289 and I guessed what my next eleven birds would be that would get me to 300. 3 July 2010 31 October 2010 11 April 2011 15 May 2012. John’s the Divine Cemetery.

Maybe spring of 2012? If you somehow made the absurd decision to not attend the symposium this year you should make amends and plan to attend the 2013 Midwest Birding Symposium which will also be held in beautiful Lakeside, Ohio. Thanks to the folks at the symposium for having me and I’ll see you all in 2013! …
Back in 2012 or 2013, when I was just starting to bird in our current neighborhood, I happened across a bird that didn’t seem to be in the one guide to Mexican birds that I had at the time. I was just getting back into birding, and had only gone to some urban sites, during 2012 and 2013. But when on June 23, 2013 I decided to follow a road just to see where it led, and it led to Pino Real, it was the first in a whole chain of exciting site discoveries. Plus, you can never have too many Red-headed Tanagers !
I also have a Grey-tailed Tattler that visits us and was marked with a plain white and an engraved blue flag “35″ in Taiwan in August 2012. I first observed it on 28th November 2012 and it left us and headed north to return to the exact same place to be observed on 19th November 2013.
2013 – 24 March. 2012 – 15 March. Regardless, I was happy to see the tail-wagging harbinger of spring migration and I can’t wait for everything else to get back too! I just finished attending a really great conference called Focus on Diversity , The Changing Face of American Birding–which is an awesome event, (next year’s event will back up to the 2013 Rio Grande Valley Bird Festival so it would be a great way to get 2 awesome events in one trip).

Here, I show you a few images of Savanna Nightjars , a Southeast Asian species I was able to observe nicely and commonly on Java and South Borneo in 2012 and 2013. This is what I am able to conclude from my age-related immense treasure trove of experience, which makes it an indisputable truth.
When to bird: The best period birdwise is from November to February, because the Danube in Serbia seldom freezes; although it did so recently, in February 2012, when the 1000 m / 3300 ft wide river was frozen solid from bank to bank, causing a large mortality among waterbirds.
2013 was an excellent year for me as a birder. Not even the incredibly record of a Black-browed Albatross in February of 2012 was enough to tempt me back. I reached two of my personal North Carolina birding goals this year. Lighting wouldn’t strike twice, anyway.
While the environmental disaster was unfolding in New Jersey, New York beaches seemed free of the plants but that all changed in October 2012. Surveys during the summer of 2013 found that many of the beaches of Breezy Point and the northeastern shore of Staten Island had many small plants scattered along the beach.
In the four-part ABA Blog series on subspecies , published in 2012, he argued we know too little about subspecies to use the term, and that birders should “show the characters of humility” and adapt alternative ways of articulating geographic differences. My first year on eBird, 2012, exactly 20 people submitted checklists for the entire state. By 2013, I was the #1 eBirder there — out of a total fo 24! The year was 2013, and I was just rediscovering a passion for birds after a 30-year hiatus. I am not very good at learning to ID birds by song or call. or the U.K.;
