I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2016 on 18 March at Kissena Park, thus kicking off spring for myself two days early. New York City Park Department Contractor Tears Up Imperiled Sparrows Home

Here’s a map showing all the Saltmarsh Sparrow nests counted between 2012 and 2015, right in this one spot, by a biologist working with this population. The last time I checked on it in the summer of 2016, the marsh still looked like the picture below, taken in March 2016, only greener. Not anymore.

My Birding Goals for 2017

Thank all that is good and holy in the world that the abomination that was 2016 is finally in the books. Here’s hoping that 2017 is a much better year than 2016! All of 2016 only netted me one new species for Queens, a Greater White-fronted Goose. I failed to do so in 2016 and that really sucks. Will I achieve them?
