Joshua Malbin has been birding in Brooklyn, NY for more than 10 of his 15-plus years doing it so far. A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.”

As you all know, “brown” can be quite good on a bird and it comes in all colours and sizes! One of the best places to find “brown” around Broome is on the highway as you head south as there is wide open country and plenty of fences for birds to perch on. Here we discovered a beautiful bird.

All we do is complain about the lack of migrating birds so far and in New York City if southeast winds are blowing we are nearly despondent because southeast winds mean that the birds are moving north but the easterly component of the winds keep usually keep the bulk of birds to our west.

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. We encountered one crossing the road in 2012, but with the cooler weather this year there was less turtle activity.

Each September we await the return of the Dollarbird Eurystomus orientalis to the Broome area and it is a lovely bird to observe. It is the only member of the roller family to come to Australia and migrates right down the east coast of Australia, but does not travel much further south than Broome on the west coast.

Some of the Grey-tailed Tattlers have managed to find some shade from the 39c (102f) temperature under the large rock, but mostly the birds are relying on the cooler temperature on the wet sand and rocks after the tide has dropped. Most of the Red Knot are in very good breeding plumage now and they do stand out very well on the grey rocks.

After 28 days of sharing the duty of sitting on three eggs we finally had the arrival of our first Pied Oystercatcher chicks for 2012 on Friday August 3rd. It is at the same time of year that the migratory shorebirds that spend part of each year in Broome are also breeding, but in the Arctic.

To be fair, Howell has also written about hummingbirds and finding birds in Mexico, which to my mind are a little easier to comprehend.
