American Avocets at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Having now visited Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in January this New Yorker will never have that problem again. Even in their basic plumage and lacking the cinnamon plumage of breeding birds they are beautiful. Then they tend to gather back together again, often moving to a different location to look for more food.

I came up just short of reaching 1,100 Birds on my overall World Life List , clocking in at 1,096, not a bad increase of 48 from the beginning of 2012 when I started at 1,048. An Aberrant Laughing Gull with Orange Legs and Bill

While at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival I could not resist making the drive north to Daytona Beach one day to witness the awesome gull fly-in from the dump to the beach. In winter, Laughing Gulls should have black legs and bill and in alternate, or breeding plumage, those parts, while staying dark, get a nice deep red color.
