Best Bird of the Weekend (First of April 2012)

My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species. The month and this particular period is all the more auspicious for me and mine, as so many friends and families celebrate spring birthdays.

Exploring the relationship between flamingos and grebes: The wonderful birds

In 2012 came an exciting new discovery: a fossilized nest. Modern flamingos build mud nests for a single egg, while modern grebes build nests of vegetation for multiple offspring. The eggs in the fossilized nest showed structural characteristics of the shell known only from modern flamingos.

February 27, 2012 Reports of large marine animal strandings in the Gulf of Mexico continue to pile up in the first two months of 2012. The babies that hatched from these eggs were released on Florida’s east coast.

Soon to be an Armchair ABA Tick – Nutmeg Mannikin in California

According to the minutes of their annual meeting from January of 2012 there was already movement on Nutmeg Mannikin in the Introduced Birds Subcommittee then: Nutmeg Mannikin listing package status. So what moved the California Bird Records Committee to action? Let’s just hope that the whydahs stick to mannikin nests!

Masked Lapwings breeding

They generally lay four eggs, but we have only seen a maximum of three surviving chicks after a few days. A good indication that they have eggs or young is the extreme noise that they make. They will often fly at both people and other animals in defense of their eggs and young. Looks like it’s coming to us in 2012 now!!

Pied Oystercatcher breeding update

Egg loss to predation has been extraordinarily bad this year and all of the nests mentioned in the last post were lost and all of the pairs of Pied Oystercatchers laid a new clutch of eggs. In fact they have not just laid once again, but many pairs have laid up to five clutches of eggs this season.
