That magnificent predator was too distant for decent photos, so I snapped some of the Long-tailed Ducks on which the owl has been sustaining itself… As for Corey, his Space Coast experience is yielding ABA birds and lifers in buckets.

I had a great time back in 2012 and even more fun in 2014. Florida is a great place to bird in January because in addition to the year-round species there are a host of birds that winter in the relatively balmy climate that Florida has in winter. It was apparently all the way back in 2012, when I was first getting back into birding after a 30 year hiatus, that I took a sad little picture, with my sad little camera, of a cute little bird that seemed to not show up anywhere at all in my field guide. According to eBird, there have been approximately 270 species seen at the hotspot that includes the harbor. The evening of September 7, 2012 was a truly memorable birding experience. I just happened to be there to experience it. Of course, unexpected experiences such as this are one of the great appeals of birding.

Both of our redpoll species, Common Redpolls and Hoary Redpolls , have nice pink coloration. Both species are wonderful birds and every winter I hope that it will be an irruption year so that I can spot redpolls again. That made the second to show up in New York, in March of 2012, very important for me to see.

Similarly, descriptions of species repeated across volumes do not lose their accuracy with each publication. Other species are splits and lumped and have had their names changed. This leads me to my third twitch for the celebrated Falcated Duck ( Anas falcata ) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in January of 2012. I make this statement with this addendum; I would not post the location of a species that could be targeted during hunting season. This was a no-brainer. I found it within 30 minutes.

From our experience the greatest risk is when the shorebirds take off in a panic flight and clip each other’s wings and several fall into the sea. There are two sub species of Red Knot here and the piersmai sub species is a much darker red colour than the rogersi sub species and easily identified in breeding plumage.
