Each chapter of The Jewel Hunter reads like a mini-travel novel. If you want to travel the world birding and drinking beer, The Jewel Hunter is a must-buy. The Jewel Hunter belongs to a singular niche, the Big Year/Big Lifelist book. The Jewel Hunter can be frustrating in this respect. And mosquitos. And leeches.
In 1976, Congress changed the official name to the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp , presumably to broaden its appeal to non-hunters. Why promote the stamp to waterfowl hunters when it is mandatory that they buy one to hunt waterfowl? clean water) benefit from the contributions of hunters and anglers.”
Proposal: Creation of a Federal Wildlife Conservation Stamp A birder, wildlife watcher, photographer and non-hunter version of the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (aka Federal Duck Stamp). She says, “there’s just a cultural bias against anything related to hunting.”
Flooding related to Tropical Storm Lee severely damaged the two farms used for raising Ring-necked Pheasants in Pennsylvania earlier this year, limiting the number of birds that will be released for slaughter by hunters (and slaughter is exactly what shooting farm-raised birds is). Never fear, hunters !
In 2012 I was successful, with the help of Doug Gochfeld, in finding all of those species in and around Three Lakes , and I hoped for a repeat performance but with better views of Bachmann’s Sparrow. Though Three Lakes is popular with hunters I did not see single other person for the first two hours I explored.

Sales managers, read this list by sales trainer Mark Hunter and ask yourself if any apply to you. Author: SMM. Great salespeople are able to find success no matter what is going on around them.
In 2012 , the NFC revised some of its goals and set forth a new vision of waterfowl management that emphasized a core of hunter and conservationist supporters. In an effort to better understand the “human dimension” of its conservation efforts, several surveys were conducted, including the National Birdwatching Survey (NBS).
I also appreciated the occasional photo of a birder (or birders or photographers) photographing vagrants, including the well-circulated one of hundreds of photographers in Beijing gathering in a semi-circle to photograph a Japanese Robin in November 2012. The two men have co-authored several previous articles on avian vagrancy.
Over 3 million pairs of Antarctic Fur Seals breed on South Georgia, saved from near extinction by fur hunters. Princeton University Press/WILDGuides/South Georgia Heritage Plus Publishing Paper, 2012, $24.95, £17.95 Seals and Whales are also given a lot of attention, with entries organized similarly to the bird species accounts.
The newsletter, full of progress summaries, instructions, profiles of volunteers, and recruitment appeals to students, hunters, fisherman, and pretty much anyone who did anything outdoors in the state, gives a sense of the collective energy that went into the Atlas and the community that they created. Geoff Malosh, Photo Editor; Catherine D.
As 2012 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 and 2011 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. Considering the bird survived a season in an area saturated with hunters and birds of prey, this facemelting rarity deserves our respect.
For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.
In 2012 came an exciting new discovery: a fossilized nest. Modern flamingos build mud nests for a single egg, while modern grebes build nests of vegetation for multiple offspring. The eggs in the fossilized nest showed structural characteristics of the shell known only from modern flamingos. And that is wonderful indeed.
And then, in 1996, a farmer/fossil-hunter named Li Yinfang found a unique fossil in his home province of Liaoning–a beautifully preserved turkey-sized creature that clearly had feathers. People and history come into play in “The dinosaur hunters,” a chapter on larger than life personalities such as E.D. No feathers!
Grant saw one once in the Hunter Valley in 1999 and I was behind on the trail and only heard the mimicry, so I considered this my “lifer” We hoped we would get another chance, but there’s no guarantees in the birding world. Suddenly I saw it-it ran down from in between us and crossed the stream- Superb Lyrebird !!
In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. A passion for one bird family is also very useful.
Another great birding adventure book is The Jewel Hunter by Chris Gooddie (Princeton Univ. Press, 2012). I think of The Jewel Hunter often when I travel to foreign countries, wishing I could do it like Goodie did. It’s a book that is still drawing comments for its passion and humor. Books for Photograph Fans, Books for Learning.
