World Sparrow Day is celebrated annually on March 20th to raise awareness across the globe about the decline of the House Sparrow and how it impacts all of us. We’ll be celebrating World Sparrow Day 2012 by running some of our favorite House Sparrow posts.

The pair of Pied Oystercatchers have been successful in raising a chick on two occasions that we are aware of in recent years and that was in 2008 and 2011. In fact they were the only pair to successfully raise a chick in the 2008 season and only one other chick survived in 2011.

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. Last year they successfully laid three eggs and they successfully raised three chicks , which is the only record that we are aware of in the local area. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.
After 28 days of sharing the duty of sitting on three eggs we finally had the arrival of our first Pied Oystercatcher chicks for 2012 on Friday August 3rd. This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.

Wild birds I’ve raised from tiny, featherless orphans demonstrate attachment to me, as would be expected for any young creature with a surrogate mother, even a weird, long-limbed primate mother. This past Saturday, 22 December 2012, was the Christmas present that Daisy gave me. Steve stopped, put the car in reverse, we raised our optics, and YES!
