My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Only trouble is, which of the seven species I saw this year do I pick?

The northwestern spread of this non-native species made it to my yard a few years ago. The lightest shade of lavender coincides with a 0 – 2% frequency of sightings, the next darker shade 2 – 10%, the next 10 – 25%, the next 25 – 40% and the darkest (almost black) shade is a 40 – 100% occurrence of the species.

It was, as they say, a “brainbird” This cost him the bird, and he had to wait until 2013 before his Leicas collided with this enormous-billed behemoth. My visit to the best sewage ponds for birding on the island of Trinidad was on 19 July 2013. Phaetusa simplex is the only species in its genus and it seems very unlikely that it will be confused with another tern species. The Trincity Sewage Ponds in Trinidad and Tobago are no exception.

The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. For obvious reasons it has listed under “other names” in field guides “Zebra Duck” and it is easily identified from all other duck species in Australia by its distinct stripes. It is a species we have not seen in flight dispersing to a new location, but they often fly up and back down rather vocally if disturbed.

A few metres further, something is jumping from one branch to another… a pair of Subalpine Warblers , a Mediterranean species that does not go much further north than this. There are a few spots where entering the heronry is allowed and the birds breeding in that section seem to be habituated to the visits.

We have finally arrived back home in Broome, but before we left Karratha in the Pilbara region of Western Australia we were lucky enough to see our first Banded Stilt Chladorhynchus leucocephalus for 2013.
