My 2013 Birding Year in Review (With My Top Ten Birding Moments!)

In 2013 I birded in two countries, submitted eBird checklists for seven U.S. At the beginning of the year I said the following about my goals for the year’s birding: I start 2013 with 297 birds on my Queens Life List , 500 birds on my ABA Life List , and 1,096 birds on my World Life List. I didn’t think so.

Whooping Crane Ancestry

In late January of 2013 I spent some time with a pair of Whooping Cranes just off Canoe Creek Road in Osceola County, Florida. I have compiled the family trees of both birds below: Ancestry Chart of 1781, born in the wild in Central Florida. Today only 19 members of this dwindling flock remain.

Summer Books for Kids (and the rest of us)

Here are three excellent but very different children’s books I enjoyed this year (two were published in 2013, one in 2011). The first, The Mangrove Tree: Planting Trees to Feed Families , tells the story of Dr. Gordon Sato’s mangrove tree-planting project, which transformed the African village of Hargigo. National Geographic Complete Birds of North America, 2nd Edition: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Twelve family accounts have been added. It is 72 pages longer than the first edition. An undisclosed number of family and species accounts have been updated. Nine photographers contributed most of the photographs used to illustrate the family sections, including Richard Crossley, Kevin T. Over 70 range maps were updated.
