Birds are gorging themselves for their imminent odysseys, while humans frantically expend themselves in the drive for as much summer fun as possible before Labor Day. Wow, wouldn’t you love to go camping in Windjana Gorge like Clare Morton did? The second weekend of August is marked, at least in these parts, by hysteria.

I was just getting back into birding, and had only gone to some urban sites, during 2012 and 2013. But when on June 23, 2013 I decided to follow a road just to see where it led, and it led to Pino Real, it was the first in a whole chain of exciting site discoveries. Plus, you can never have too many Red-headed Tanagers !

With a reduced level of human interaction, the birds in this patch of forest seemed relaxed. More relaxed than I had ever witnessed – and this patch is one of my fondest, I’ve birded there numerous times since I was introduced to the area in 2013. We, as humans must strive to be casual, passive participants in life.

Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds human emotions and thoughts. Still, the authors praise more than mourn, emphasizing that the most severe changes occurred before 1955, and that some NYC infrastructure changes have actually helped area bird life.

Due to the fact that the water is for human consumption there are no water based activities permitted at the dam and it is purely a nature-based day trip. We drove up to the lookout and heard the unmistakeable screeching sound of a Western Bowerbird , which was our 318th bird for 2013 ! Little Black Cormorants.
