Hong Kong Trip Report: February 2014

I visited Hong Kong from February 20-27, 2014. Hundreds massing at Mai Po, many coming into breeding plumage. Despite impressive, often rampant development, Hong Kong reserves 40% of its land as greenspace. The result is a nature lover’s paradise rich with mountains, beaches, and birds. Lots and lots of birds! 9 Little Grebe.

The Changing Fortunes of Europe’s Vultures – Part 3 The Egyptian Vulture

The most recent estimates suggest that some 1,500 pairs breed in Spain. That’s about half of the entire European breeding population. Look further back, to the first census undertaken and the number of breeding pairs had been estimated at 94 in 1987. Its stronghold is the Iberian Peninsula.

The Bank Swallow Is On the List of Common Birds in Steep Decline

Tricolored Blackbird in Trouble in California

The Results of the 2014 Tricolored Blackbird Statewide Survey confirm that this species is in rapid decline. ” The report continues: “Following the breeding season, most tricolors are found in the Sacramento Valley where they aggregate with red-winged and other blackbird species and feed, often in large flocks, on ripening rice.
