Ron Pittaway has published his winter finch forecast for the winter of 2013-2014. Breeding success is higher in areas with budworm outbreaks because the abundant larvae are eaten by adults and fed to young. Numbers are increasing due to expanding spruce budworm outbreaks in northern forests.

I visited Hong Kong from February 20-27, 2014. Hundreds massing at Mai Po, many coming into breeding plumage. Despite impressive, often rampant development, Hong Kong reserves 40% of its land as greenspace. The result is a nature lover’s paradise rich with mountains, beaches, and birds. Lots and lots of birds! 9 Little Grebe.

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. I can also monitor any movement along the coast during the year when they are no longer breeding.

Along Broome’s coastline we encounter literally hundreds of Red-necked Stint among all the flocks of migratory shorebirds that make Australia their home during the non-breeding season. This individual was more intent on feeding than worrying about our proximity and already had good breeding plumage.

Partners in Flight estimates that there are nearly 50 million breeding Willow Ptarmigan throughout the world. Willow Ptarmigan calls are apparently favorites with Steven Spielberg.

We have been busy walking the beach and keeping an eye on our local Pied Oystercatchers and the two pairs that laid their eggs earliest for the 2018 breeding season and successfully hatched out their chicks have now lost their chicks to predation.
