As I sit at my desk writing this post about the latest attempt at breeding for one of our pairs of Pied Oystercatchers I realise I have written 677 posts now for this website. This rocky area high up beyond the beach sand offers great camouflage and protection. I suppose they know me! One large Pied Oystercatcher family !

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book. That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India!

2014 has been a good year for us at 10,000 Birds. Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. That’s Redgannet’s BBOTY at the top of the post.

A few weeks ago I introduced you to the first pair of Pied Oystercatchers to start to breed this year. It protects nesting shorebirds year round. It also protects nesting turtles, which nest later in the year. It is earlier than other years, but now some of the other pairs of Pied Oystercatchers have started to nest.
