As I sit at my desk writing this post about the latest attempt at breeding for one of our pairs of Pied Oystercatchers I realise I have written 677 posts now for this website. This rocky area high up beyond the beach sand offers great camouflage and protection. I suppose they know me! One large Pied Oystercatcher family !

The Kerkini Lake National Park is my favourite birding area in the whole of the Balkans and while I’ve been here in April and again (migration), September (migration), October (coffee break), December and January (wintering), this was my first time in the breeding season, in May. Tricolored Blackbird in Trouble in California

On a side note, the bird is also kind of ugly, so maybe the chicks never seeing their father has a certain protective function. Contrary to alleged preferences among humans, the golden-headed cisticola has a shorter tail during the breeding season ( source ).
