ABA Field Guides to Birds of Colorado and Florida

10,000 Birds

I was birding one of my favorite places yesterday, Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Palm Beach County, Florida, and, as generally happens, people were asking me about the birds they were admiring. Species Accounts in both titles are arranged loosely in ABA Checklist order, with some flipping around of order within each family.

Best Bird of the Year 2014

10,000 Birds

2014 has been a good year for us at 10,000 Birds. Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. What’s the Next ABA-Countable Exotic?

10,000 Birds

In February of 2013, I wrote a piece outlining my thoughts on which exotic bird species should be added to the American Bird Association (ABA) checklist. 10,000 Birds

That will be the opening day of the 18th Annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. I had a great time back in 2012 and even more fun in 2014. This is the spot in Florida to find a Whooping Crane. Florida Scrub-Jays can be grumpy, but not as grumpy as I’ll be if I miss Whooping Crane again.

10,000 Birds

Although you know from the beginning that Dorian will end up with 618 species, there is suspense as he searches for skulkers like Black Rail, rarities like Rufous-back Robin, and his trip nemesis, Pacific Golden Plover. This is a smartly written book.

An Aberrant Laughing Gull with Orange Legs and Bill

10,000 Birds

This is perhaps the best place in Florida to find a rare gull for the state and though I had no luck picking a vagrant California Gull out of the teeming hordes I did enjoy myself as much as I did back in 2012. But my failure to find a rare species doesn’t mean that I saw nothing of note.

Big Years in 2013

10,000 Birds

On a Big Year, every species counts equally, even the lowly House Sparrow. As of my writing this he is off to a roaring start with 169 species recorded already. Rangel Diaz is doing a big year in Miami-Dade County, Florida, hoping to reach 300 species, and keeping a blog about it. And who’s planning one for 2014?
