I visited Hong Kong from February 20-27, 2014. Mai Po Nature Reserve : world famous locale for shorebirds, waterfowl, waders, and wetland birds; wintering grounds for certain endangered species. The combination of these scheduled and informal birding efforts culminated in an amazing 135 species seen, many of which were lifers for me!

The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.

A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well.

Thanks to industrialization and modern transportation, the various labors required to make beer are often separated by great distances and divided by vocation. For birders who know the importance of being in just the right habitat in finding a particular species, this isn’t at all an unfamiliar idea. Ravenswood Winery: Besieged (2014).

For example, fancy words will be used where normal words might seem appropriate: birds of the same species are “conspecifics” (and they will never, ever “flock together”). Over two years (2011 and 2012), scientists captured 50 birds and successfully transported them from Niho to Laysan. It is all business.

Once again we referred to the Wildwalks website for another option that included using public transport, with a train being our preference. The most common duck was the Chestnut Teal and this was our first chance this year to add them onto the 2014 year list. We saw 56 species with the highlight being the Grey Goshawk.

The family has about 37 species, but that includes several fulvettas – only 21 of the species have “parrotbill” in their names (and frankly, the bills of fulvettas do not look like those of parrots at all). A paper on breeding of the species was actually researched right here at Wawushan.
