The year 2016 has been a pretty good year. Here’s hoping your 2016 was as full of great birds as mine was. I opened the year in California and even though I flew out in the evening on New Year’s Day I did see some species out there that I would otherwise not have seen for the year. Or at least written on a blog.

It’s also the perfect time of year for a good spring cleaning to find all those drink-sooner-than-later bottles still kicking around the cellar – which is how we unearthed this week’s wine, a 2016 Chardonnay from the Raeburn Winery in California’s Russian River region. Many sad and unfortunate things occurred in 2016, but the birding was good. I think this might be my best bird of 2016. The Cory’s was one of my birding goals of 2016, one of the last commonly seen birds of the East Coast needed for my ABA list. (10) It was a good birding year. In 2016, the DOT started rebuilding a bridge on the highway next to Four Sparrow Marsh, and maybe because of the noise, maybe because of the removal of some buffer plants, the sparrows did not breed that year. There was still hope that the sparrows might return. Not anymore.

The owners have been faithfully feeding the birds and welcoming birders for years, and it’s only going to get better in 2016. This small cafe is very much locally owned and operated, and was rebuilt on the same spot where a strong earthquake took it down in 2009. Expect lots of hummingbird action, Emerald Toucanet , barbets, and more.

In 2016, the ABA was starting an ambitious recruiting drive, to expand its membership from about 12,000. If 1 in 100 birders was a member of the ABA, that would pencil out to 1.2

I can’t recall the first time it was spotted, but it has been visible in the same area since at least 2016. Not that I was disappointed with it being a Limpkin , of course the much rarer stork would’ve necessitated a rare bird report but this distinctive bird was something I had been hoping to see for many years.
