Today, it’s time to celebrate that combination of magic, obsession, and passion once again with the 2016 Global Big Day! Yes, ironically, the 2016 Global Big Day happens to be the same day when I am scheduled to take a visiting in-law relative out for a day trip.
As always, we were high above the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, perched precariously on the platform atop Battery Harris, the old artillery battery built to defend New York Harbor in World War II. The persistent southwest winds had us convinced that we wouldn’t do so well but before we knew it we had cleared 80 species!
As always, we held our sit high atop Battery Harris at Fort Tilden on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. I was keeping a worried eye on our list of never-missed species, which is relatively short because we had a very bad year in 2016 when rain washed out our efforts early. Barra to be precise, just a few miles out of the city and adjacent to the Olympic Park for the 2016 games. It is surprising how quickly the pain is forgotten when batteries die, media cards need changing and the focus lock refuses to budge. How lucky then, that aforementioned bar was on the beach in Rio de Janiero.
