It was a good birding year. Many sad and unfortunate things occurred in 2016, but the birding was good. I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey.

Lucky for us, we’ve spent much of that time here at Birds and Booze comforted by robust red wines, warming spiced ciders, strong whiskies, and dark, rich beers. It’s been nearly half a year since we last featured a white wine at Birds and Booze but a pleasant and approachable Chardonnay makes a fine selection any time of the year.

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2016 on 18 March at Kissena Park, thus kicking off spring for myself two days early. Over the last ten years my average first phoebe has been the 23rd of March, meaning that this bird was five days earlier than average and beat last year’s first phoebe by ten days. 2015 – 28 March.

But that time, I was shocked to find that about half the birds I had expected were missing — along with half the lake. I knew that the 2020-2021 winter would be worse for the lake than the 2016-2017 winter. Down among the reeds, smaller birds could be just as exciting. Just part of one flock. But this one was more fun.

Should I add, in this green oasis 152 bird species were recorded in the last three and a half years and that the two local White-tailed Eagle pairs are still loyal to their nesting territories. This is clearly one of its first flights – it may have even taken the first flight today!

With the successful first Global Big Day the application of simultaneous count to help understand bird populations on multiple scales has a new meaning. My birding buddy Meryl actually spotted it first and she might have been mildly taken aback by the enthusiasm I showed for my first phoebe of the year. The bird was relatively distant but I did manage to poorly digiscope a few shots, the best of which is above. 2016 – 18 March. For me, it is now officially spring! Enjoy spring!
