There is not a slightest trace of asphalt, nor the promised sewage ponds, which may be good for the two Little Ringed Plover families incubating their eggs at the site as we speak, but is far from good for the people living there. The oldest Laysan albatross was last seen raising a chick on Midway Atoll in 2016, at age 66. They emerged from their bloody rampage leaving fifteen adults dead, and fifteen destroyed nests with either smashed or missing eggs. The young men had severed the birds’ legs in order to remove the tags. Gutierrez was 18.

I also only managed to see rather common bird species at Shennongjia, a nature reserve in Hubei province, China. A bit of kindness in naming birds could go a long way.

Our 23 kilometre stretch of beach that runs from Gantheaume Poin t to Willie Creek has finally seen the arrival of the first Pied Oystercatcher chicks for the 2016 breeding season. The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.

Since 2016, the Rustic Bunting has been listed as Vulnerable, as data suggested rapid population declines (HBW). I did not find much about this bird online except for a paper with the exciting title “A new quill mite Torotrogla emberizae sp. led its listing as Vulnerable. Maybe there is some justice in this world after all.
