All photos were taken in Australia in December 2016 – locations included Brisbane and surroundings, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, Melbourne, and the coast near Melbourne. The Australasian Figbird is a member of the Oriole family despite not being yellow. When there are no streetlights around, they grudgingly accept trees as well.

Handsome but never flashy, the Old World Buntings are a fascinating family of birds. Releases took place from 2008 to 2016, eventually establishing a viable population of around 50 pairs in the county. There are no fewer than 45 of them, of which I’ve been lucky enough to have seen 25. This technique proved highly successful.

If you see a flock of kestrels in southern Europe, then the chances are that they will be Lessers, for the Common Kestrel never flocks, though occasionally in summer you will see a family hunting together. However, a drastic decline followed, and census results for 2016 and 2017 produced counts of around 2,500 pairs.
