Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) declared the Golden-cheeked Warbler “ endangered ” under the Endangered Species Act. The judge promptly dismissed the first and third arguments because they did not relate to whether the warbler should or should not be listed under the Endangered Species Act.

In 2016, the global spoon-billed sandpiper population was estimated at 240–456 mature individuals – a critically endangered species. This is about a three-hour drive North of Shanghai, where I live.

But its U.S. range largely consists of valuable real estate along the Southern California coast and urban development around San Diego and Los Angeles has eliminated much of its habitat.

Species with small ranges ( e.g. , single island endemics) or tiny populations ( e.g. , endangered species) are especially vulnerable. Nevertheless, the 2017 CBC tallied 1,934 birds of 82 species, both of which were low counts for past CBCs ( e.g., the 2016 CBC had 2,579 birds, 97 species).

Will the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) conference delegates up-list them to Appendix I of the Convention, forbidding any future sale over international borders? Turn your eyes to the European Union which could have stopped it in 2016, but chose not to. One may say so.

The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. New Zealand: The Didn’t Bloody Even See It Award. I saw a number of lifers this year in New Zealand, but my bird of the year is one I heard but didn’t see.

By any measure, the recovery of the California Condor has been a remarkable success.
