Highlights from the 2016 Arenal, Costa Rica Christmas Count

But enough of that, now for some highlights from the first count of the season in Costa Rica, the 2016 Arenal Christmas Count !: It’s a bio-energetic, organic farm. Since this is an organic farm, the growing areas also provide lots of habitat for migrants and many local species, and are thus very birdy.

I headed out to the corner of the county, a place I’d known from a survey I did on an organic farm.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of December 2016)

This weekend, we all enjoyed the sight of a Bald Eagle perched in a farm field along the highway, an uncommon spot for an uncommonly charismatic avian. I’m not dreaming of a white Christmas either… I’m dreading it. But we have splendid birds in Western NY all year long.

But if I have to pick a living bird, American Kestrels hunting along farm roads always work for me. Speaking of summer, the coolest birds I saw this weekend were on the festive curtains (pictured above) in my son’s new cabin at sleepaway camp in the Finger Lakes. Pretty swanky, right?

Germany’s Great Bustards and how to see them

Since then, we have seen a marvellous recovery, with an estimate of 123 in 2012, 145 in 2013, 165 in 2014, 197 in 2015 and now in 2016, around 232 Great Bustards roam the wilds of Germany, nearly doubling their number within just a handful of years! Follow the track through a gap in the pine tree plantation and immediately turn right.
