The Birds are All Right

It was the month of March, 2017, when I went to Lake Cuitzeo to check up on our migratory waterfowl and shorebirds one last time before they travelled north to breed. Lake Cuitzeo is Mexico’s second largest lake, and its uniformly shallow waters make it a powerful magnet for dabbling ducks and shorebirds. This was once my lake.

Who cares for your ducks in the winter?

Now, I do hope you have stayed with me to this point, because there is a moral to this story: How much do you like your ducks, grebes, sandpipers, and plovers? The lake’s shallower western half, on which dabbling ducks and shorebirds depend the most, is seriously affected by fluctuating water levels.

Every year, Ducks Unlimited of Mexico, A.C. The various national versions of Ducks Unlimited are mostly an outgrowth of sports hunting. In 2017, I saw the results of one of DUMAC’s surveys. Now, I secretly do suspect that many millions of ducks may spend the winter in my own backyard. But I did both.

I remember well my indignation in early 2017, when whoever controls the east-west flow of water had allowed the west side to dry up while maintaining the east side at full depth. The normally-shallower west side attracts all sorts of ducks and shorebirds; the east side usually offers only American Coots and Clark’s Grebes.)

Saving Birds From Invasive … Plants?

They include Black-footed Albatrosses , Laysan Ducks , and roughly 65 percent of the world’s Laysan Albatrosses. These efforts appear to be paying off–most of the mature Verbesina plants on one of the atoll’s islands are history, and officials expect full eradication from Midway by 2017.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of February 2017)

Neither was it an American Bittern , a Harlequin Duck , nor any of the three scoters despite him seeing all of those as well. It’s a good duck and he’d missed seeing them. Instead, Corey chose his first Barrow’s Goldeneye in a couple of years as his Best Bird of the Weekend. How about you?
