Casa Ferreirinha ‘Papa Figos’ Vinho Tinto (2017)

10,000 Birds

Of the thirty or so members of the family Icteridae that go by the name “oriole” on the western side of the Atlantic Ocean, several species are partial enough to fruit that they even visit feeders that offer it as jelly, as the sugar-preserved form usually reserved for human consumption is known. Good birding and happy drinking!

Please Don’t Ask for an Aztec

10,000 Birds

In the case of most of these wonderful bird species, I probably know where they are most likely to be found. In ten years of hardcore birding, I have seen Aztec Thrushes only four times, never twice in the same year (2017, 2018, 2019, and now, 2024). Another local species that loves burnt-over areas is the Gray Silky-Flycatcher.

10,000 Birds

For the last several years, I have produced a small run of calendars for my fiends and family. The ones that will be in the calendar, the elite 12 are selected by not only the quality of the image, but most colorful, most unique, and in the case of a couple of birds cut out this year, species that appeared in last years Calendar.

Quintas das Arcas: Bicudo Vinho Verde (2017)

10,000 Birds

I haven’t yet been birding in Europe but whenever I occasionally skim a field guide about the birds on the other side of the Atlantic, I’m always encouraged to find that I’m already familiar with many species found over there, even though most of my birding experience has been limited to eastern North America. I remember the talking (Song?)
