Puerto Rico’s Birds after Hurricane Maria

10,000 Birds

In September of 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by two powerful hurricanes: it was grazed by Irma and then clobbered by Maria, a Category 4 storm that cut a devastating swath across the island. Species with small ranges ( e.g. , single island endemics) or tiny populations ( e.g. , endangered species) are especially vulnerable.

A bird species battling an onslaught of invasive rats just got a glimpse of hope. Researchers say that South Georgia Pipits have hatched chicks. The Shorebirds of North America: A Natural History and Photographic Celebration–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Taking inspiration from Matthiessen’s 1967 book (long out of print), which combined his natural history essays with species accounts by Ralph S. I did a little research and found plovers and snipe o n menus and in cookbooks of the time, though I still haven’t found recipes for Dunlin or Dowitchers.

Foundational Work

10,000 Birds

Well, Chester Lamb was a researcher for University of California, Berkeley… who died in 1965. I finally became the first person to pass him up in first place for the state in 2017, a full 52 years after he finished his work here. Why is this significant? His lists were included in eBird posthumously.)
