A bird species battling an onslaught of invasive rats just got a glimpse of hope. While this is happy news for any parents, and wonderful news for any threatened species (these Pipits live only on Antarctica’s South Georgia Island and number only 3,000-4,000 pairs), it’s tremendous news for those trying to eradicate rats from the island.

With only a few more days left, 2017 was coming to a close. Birdwise, it turned out to be a good one and my year list was almost 400 species long, which made me happy… almost. Too short-tailed to be a kestrel, it’s a Merlin and the species #400 in barely more than an hour on my first morning at the Kerkini lake! The solution?

In the case of most of these wonderful bird species, I probably know where they are most likely to be found. In ten years of hardcore birding, I have seen Aztec Thrushes only four times, never twice in the same year (2017, 2018, 2019, and now, 2024). Another local species that loves burnt-over areas is the Gray Silky-Flycatcher.

One of my favorite bird species living by my house is the Juniper Titmouse. In 2017, my neighborhood, Aldea de Santa Fe, began a Juniper Titmouse Nesting Box Project in collaboration with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch Program. A total of 79 fledged, which beat our 2017 count of 52.

It is only in recent years that the White-quilled Honeyeater became a separate species from the Blue-faced Honeyeater. eBird mentioned the changes in August 2017. The White-quilled Honeyeaters really can’t be mistaken for any other species. The colours of the White-quilled Honeyeater are also a stand-out feature.

Rochester is still wintry, but bird activity among the common species has picked up quite a bit. Your first weekend of spring or fall may have been uneventful in terms of birds, but pace yourself. A local birder friend of mine, Ricardo Arredondo, mentioned to me just last week that while the Swainson’s Hawk is supposed to be only a transient species during migration here in southwestern Mexico, he has seen it throughout the winter months near his city of Zamora. I am a birder and I can claim that out of Serbia’s total of 350+ bird species, highly urbanised inner city areas of Belgrade hold almost 100 birds, while the outskirts have more than 200 species. eBird says that, at the time of writing (April 2017), there are some ten hotspots that have crossed the 100 bird species mark.

Nine species (including the Hermit Thrush and its migratory identical-twin species, and our five non-migratory Nightingale-Thrushes ) belong to the genus Catharus. Being such a difficult species, I was very grateful that my first sighting of the Aztec Thrush, in April of 2017, involved not only photos, but also witnesses.

The species is only in the north of Australia and they are often found in locations that are hard to get to year round. We have been able to observe Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens in a few locations across the north of Australia and they were quite easy to see in the car-park at Big Horse Creek in 2017.

Just last year, 5 new bird species and 5 new subspecies were discovered in a few short weeks of fieldwork on the islands of Taliabu, Peleng and Batudaka. The Indigo was even on its way to becoming my default species for any indescript female LBJ. But, until 2020, I almost never saw it, which is frustrating with such a loud species. I remember well my indignation in early 2017, when whoever controls the east-west flow of water had allowed the west side to dry up while maintaining the east side at full depth. In the parallel photo at this post’s start, you can see a bridge crossing… a pasture! But habitat reduction can have its occasional advantages.
