Pied Oystercatcher breeding season 2018

This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.

In the non-breeding season, Common Merganser all look pretty much like females. Not a bad look though – more attractive than the male breeding plumage, I think. The Black-rumped Magpie is one of the four new species that were split from the Eurasian Magpie in 2018. Not very subtle in their self-presentation, these birds.

Lake Cuitzeo gets good

Fortunately, the very abundant 2018 rains raised the water level to heights I had never seen, and so far, that seems to be making up for this year’s poor rains. Oddly, I saw no Snowy Plovers, even though these apparently breed by the lakeshore. The west half of the lake is never more than a few feet deep.

One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. ” While this species is not explicitly associated with infanticide, the fact that the bird lays 1-3 eggs but only ever raises one chick also implies that the species should also be closely watched by child protection agencies.
