A Lake Reborn… sort of

10,000 Birds

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. The good news is that this summer central Mexico is experiencing its best rains since 2018. It is also a vital wintering and migratory site for most of these species, so I imagine they take its health very personally, as well. They’re riding horses on my lake.

Saving the Drowning Cormorant, or the Kerkini Lake, Greece

We are entering the mixed colony of 11 species ( Grey , Squacco , Purple and Black-crowned Night Herons ; Great , Little and, recently, Cattle Egrets ; Eurasian Spoonbill (below) and Glossy Ibis ; Pygmy and Great Cormorant ). These visits are strictly regulated and the birds are habituated to people, showing no reaction to our presence.

Starting Another Year of Birding in Costa Rica

That bunch of noise marked the official beginning of 2018 and although I was annoyed at knowing that I had to get up in four short hours, I couldn’t help but feel a smidgeon of excitement. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis; Sarapiqui, 2-Jan. A new year was starting and that meant that I could start a new list!

The return of the Old Man

Conservation efforts have been sufficiently successful for the bird’s status to be downlisted, in 2018, from Critically Endangered to Endangered. In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections. I haven’t managed to discover the latest population figures for Morocco, but it must be close to 1,000 birds.

To surpass a challenging number of species, the planning, the conniving for major birding should have begun back in the past, in 2018. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis; Turrucares, 1-Jan. It’s a fresh start, a time when we can start counting once again to see how many birds we can find over the next 12 months.
