Taking inspiration from Matthiessen’s 1967 book (long out of print), which combined his natural history essays with species accounts by Ralph S. I did a little research and found plovers and snipe o n menus and in cookbooks of the time, though I still haven’t found recipes for Dunlin or Dowitchers.

More than 50 years ago, the Hawaiian Goose (Nene) was one of the first birds listed under the Endangered Species Act, part of the inaugural “ Class of 1967 ”. Under the Endangered Species Act, any listing, uplisting, downlisting, or removal from a list requires a formal “rulemaking” process.

These hurricanes prompted a personal interest in the impact of hurricanes on birds, so I did some research, which ultimately led to an article in the April 2018 issue of Birding magazine. Species with small ranges ( e.g. , single island endemics) or tiny populations ( e.g. , endangered species) are especially vulnerable.

The White-eared Barbet is another bird species with an annoyingly sensible Latin species name, leucotis (white-eared). Obviously, my job as a blog post writer would be a lot easier if there was a racist slave-trader named Ernesto Leucotis who somehow got a bird species named after him. But the same species was never found again.

It wasn’t until 2018 that Michoacán had its first true Top 100. Well, Chester Lamb was a researcher for University of California, Berkeley… who died in 1965. One young girl had sent her a photo she had taken with her mobile phone, wanting to know what species it might be, and was it a good one.

Then it’s a matter of doing a little research on the internet to find who rang the bird you saw, and then emailing the details of your sighting. They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. Once again I did my internet research and managed to contact the person who had ringed the gull.
