That is the state of our 2020 year lists and general birding experience. The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. Mabamba Swamp is where Corey and I spotted our first Shoebill in the company of an international delegation attending the 2019 African Bird Expo.
Being in a boat, digiscoping a Shoebill in the rain, was one of the best birding experiences I’ve ever had, comparable only to feeding Maria. If you are into amazing avian-dense trail experiences, you either want to bird Pipeline Road or want to bird it again. But this type of singular experience can be enjoyed in the Old World as well. Although Kibale famously offers a more complete chimpanzee experience, the long views the Royal Mile served up left me plenty satisfied.
