10,000 Birds

While The Observer’s Book of Birds was an inspirational little book for me as a small child, it didn’t take me long to want to learn more. My father was a keen reader, and on most Saturday afternoons he would go the local public library. I would often accompany him, and I soon discovered the shelves of natural-history books.

An Inspiration for Life

10,000 Birds

As a small child I was fascinated by animals, but it was when a pair of Blackbirds nested close to the house that I really became interested in birds. I wanted to learn more about them, so my parents gave me the five shillings I needed to buy my first bird book: The Observer’s Book of Birds. Stokes Guide to Finches of the United States and Canada: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

It’s a freezing, quiet January morning in Denver, Colorado. The year is 2011 and I might be the only person left in the hotel. Everyone else at the academic conference left early the day before–panels cancelled, vendors packed–in fear of a major snowstorm. Not me. This was good news to me and instead of leaving early, I extended my stay by one day.

I Have Questions

10,000 Birds

“Let’s care for wildlife. Bird crossing.” One of the things I enjoy about going into nature with other birders is that we are all so darned curious. We say we go to see birds. But give us a half hour, and we will surely go down some rabbit hole involving interesting insects, wildflowers, or geological formations. Or a literal rabbit hole, should we happen upon one.

On a winter’s day, a Pileated Woodpecker chops away at a fallen log. Its audience consists of a Hairy Woodpecker and a Downy Woodpecker. Found A Frozen Bird

Reddit Animals

Not literally frozen. But I was driving with my dad and saw the bird stuck in the road, so we stopped to pick it up. And it didn’t make any movements besides flying out of our hands and stopped a few feet away. The mouth was open the whole time. We brought it over to our house where we could give it some water, and then let it just sit there. However there’s a bunch of wasps nearby and we can’t move it.

Tigers and Lions

Reddit Animals

Dumb question, but i have to ask it. There was a show back in the late to mid 2000s, that basically put animals against each other, in some cases dissecting animals, making mock props of them.and long story short I could have sworn I heard them say lions and Tigers are basically pallete swaps of the same animal, from a physical standpoint. First, how true is that statement do you think?

What is one thing you wish zoos did differently, or what aspects of a zoo do you like and don’t like?

Reddit Animals

Hi, I am a university student currently doing an assignment on zoo enclosure design. The assignment is to create a zoo enclosure for an animal given to your group which is rarely in zoos (im not saying what animal im designing an enclosure for). I am curious about how the general public views zoo enclosures and what they want different. I know some of you probably know a lot about zoos but am still curious about your opinions.

Reddit Animals

Yellow jacket wasp and hornet species mainly because the thought that they can fly fast, are always buzzing around your picnic area, they can become aggressive when you raid their nest not to mention they do have photographic memory and unlike an bee, could sting you over and over since their stingers are smooth and pointed upwards which enables them to not lose their stinger right away For tarantulas and scorpions (who I’m not afraid of) at least you can walk away and at least spot them in time
