Bavarian Alps Part III – Soierngruppe

10,000 Birds

Having spent several days on a birding and hiking trip in the Alps, my two buddies and I had two more days remaining. The last segment of our hiking trip (and correspondingly the last post of this mini-series) took us to the Soierngruppe, a relatively free-standing group of mountains forming a circular barrier arround two small picturesque lakes.

Bird Pellets: A Complete Photographic Guide–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Bird pellets are wondrous things. Open them up and see tiny mammal skulls, teeny thigh bones, beetle wings, fusty feathers, squirrel hair, reptile scales, grasses, fruit seeds, maybe even bird bands and plastic bits. They’re useful resources for researching bird food sources (present and historical), relative numbers of small mammals in a bird’s prey area, and seed dispersal.

That Awkward Stage

10,000 Birds

So there I was, with three birding buddies, in a rare outing to a site only on the very edge of Morelia’s urban area. We were looking at a beautifully flowering Coral Tree (Erythrina sp.) which had attracted lots of bird activity. One of these birds looked yellow, but with black beginning to develop behind its sharply pointed beak.

Why I love sparrows

I’ve lived all my life in Toronto, Canada. I have been lucky to be able to travel to other places to bird, but Toronto is where my birding adventures began. There is always so much to see in every season. Toronto is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario. The three rivers that run through the city have carved out ravines. The city is very green, with parks everywhere.

Rediscovering Black Vultures: A Journey from Ignorance to Awe

10,000 Birds

My childhood home in Trinidad, sits in a tranquil rural area on the very edge of the boundary limits of the Borough. As a child, the lush landscapes were simply part of the background, with Black Vultures occasionally spotted gliding in the distance. Does anyone else get positively overwhelmed by animals?

Reddit Animals

I have been living with a cat for 3 years by now, and i feel so happy whenever he is around. Something i observed is how i tend to get overwhelmed positively when animals are around, whether it is the cat in my house, or animals i encounter while spending time outside, it is a burst of positive feelings which i struggle to control or explain. When i am at home i love playing with my cat and seeing how he follows me with his sight, i love how he is actually a living creature and shows emotions an

Do cats have an innate understanding of fellow big cats' behavior?

Reddit Animals

I saw a video not long ago of a service dog coming across a hyena enclosure in a zoo. And the hyena pride almost immediately notices that there is a strangely similar animal just on the other side of the glass. They come to see the dog, which of course is quite spooked and are completely obsessed over him. So, i've been wondering for a while whether, should you place a cat in a space with say, lions, leopards or tigers for instance - would they be able to achieve innately a kind of mutual un
