The bird was such a hit with residents that Kasia, who went on to found the rescue organization Kasia’s Ark Bird Rescue , continued the effort once she returned to New Orleans. Sounds like a win-win. (Or Or is that a quack-quack?).

Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. The subtle white edging to the gape of this bird indicates it is near breeding time.

Though the birding around Lake Kerkini may be outstanding, it’s inevitably the lake itself that is the centre of interest. The Greylags are interesting, as they are of the eastern race, rubrirostris , with distinctive pink legs and beaks, unlike the orange of our birds at home in Britain.

The country is also famous for its regular sightings of that most wanted of birds, the African Pitta. Just be prepared for well…almost anything.

Lake Kerkini National Park in the north of Greece is the very best birding area in the Balkan Peninsula and definitely among the top ten hotspots of Europe. Some 320 species have been recorded here, and in springtime it is possible to observe more than 150 bird species in a week. The lake lies at a mere 35 m / 115 ft a.s.l.

It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a Greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a man named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for Animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need.

We found some very simple and nice cabañas outside of town and spent the night by a fireplace talking about birds to some local people. The road went past some ruins that had been abandoned by the town people some 100 years ago and it followed the river gorge for 10 km on its way down to the Amazon. This was very relaxing!

I enjoy digiscoping–using a digital camera with my spotting scope to get photos of birds. Originally digiscoping started as a way to simply get a documentation or souvenir photo of a bird using point and shoot pocket cameras with scopes or binoculars. It’s changed quite a bit over the years.

Just look at this bird: Do birds get any blander? Had I not been with some European birders who knew what they were about I would never have noticed the adult Barred Warblers in the vicinity, of which I only got fleeting glimpses, and would likely have been flummoxed completely by this bland little bird.
