You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. When that isn’t possible, many raptor rehabbers keep tabs on nests and will place an abandon chick in a foster nest.

If you have been feeding black-oil sunflower and suddenly switch to straight safflower, birds will abandon your feeders. Safflower is not the favorite food of house sparrows, red-winged blackbirds and squirrels. She wrote the books Disapproving Rabbits and City Birds/Country Birds. This is it, it’s called safflower seed.
