Animal welfare groups led by the Humane Society of the United States have agreed to abandon a fall ballot issue against animal cruelty as part of a deal with state farm groups brokered by Gov. I know many will disagree with me and say it's a cop-out, but I'll take what I can get. From the Associated Press.

While there are no exact numbers on how many animals are coming in from foreclosed homes (since many people don’t give an accurate reason), shelters have noted a dramatic increase in the number of homeless pets they take in, either from owners dropping them off, or from pets that are simply abandoned outdoors or in empty houses.

Each year these groups combined, rescue and find homes for over 2,000 abandoned Southland dogs and cats, animals that most likely would otherwise have lost their lives. Because of foreclosures, the city shelters are in crisis and flooded with animals – which, in turn, has dramatically increased the euthanasia rate.
